2. Showed how a current carrying wire behaves like a magnet.

When an electric current passes through a wire, it behaves like a magnet. This is the magnetic effect of the electric current. If the electric current does not passes through, it loses its magnetic effect. These coils of wire are called electromagnets. This discovered by Hans Christian Oersted.

Invention of Hans Christian Oersted

Hans Christian Oersted discovered that an electric current in a wire could deflect a magnetic compass needle.

Oersted's discovery shocked the world of science, because at that time scientists believed that magnetism and electricity were not related.

However, Oersted studied electricity and magnetism and believed that somehow the electric and magnetic forces interfered (influenced) each other.

The Hans Christian Oersted Experiment

In 1820, Oersted demonstrated an experiment in his lectures. Oersted placed the wire over the magnetic needle. At that time, the compass needle pointed north as usual.

then Oersted connected wires to both ends of the battery to pass electric current through them. When the wire begins to carry current, you can see a change in the compass needle.

The needle that originally pointed north, shifted slightly from its starting position. This is subtle, but indicates that the electric field in the wire affects the magnetic field in the compass needle.

Due to the insignificant change in the needle, Oersted's discovery was met with controversy and was dismissed as a coincidence.

However, Oersted continued to observe the phenomenon and returned to experimenting on a larger scale.

Using a source of electricity in the form of a voltaic pile, Oersted conducted experiments by trying various types of wires.

The result of Hans Christian Oersted's experiment is that the compass needle is deflected by an electric current, and the needle turns in the opposite direction when the electric current is reversed.

That is, not only the presence of electricity affects magnetism. However, also the direction of the electric current determines the change.

Oersted also found that electricity still affects and changes the direction of the compass needle even though the compass needle and the current-carrying wire are separated by wood and glass.

Explanation:

Here are the abovementioned scientists and their contributions in different science fields.

1. André-Marie Ampère made the revolutionary discovery that a wire carrying electric current can attract or repel another wire next to it that's also carrying electric current. He went on to formulate Ampere's Law of electromagnetism and produced the best definition of electric current of his time.

2. In 1820, Michael Faraday produced the first known compounds of carbon and chlorine. In 1825 he isolated and described benzene. What’s more, in 1821 he invented the first electric motor, and in the early 1830s, he discovered a way to convert mechanical energy into electricity on a large scale, creating the first electric generator.

3. Heinrich Rudolf Hertz was a German physicist who first conclusively proved the existence of the electromagnetic waves predicted by James Clerk Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism. The unit of frequency, cycle per second, was named the "hertz" in his honor.

4. James Clerk Maxwell is most famous for his theory of electromagnetism, which showed that light was electromagnetic radiation. His theory is considered to have paved the way for both quantum mechanics and Einstein’s theory of special relativity.

5. Hans Christian Ørsted discovered that electric currents create magnetic fields, which was the first connection found between electricity and magnetism. Oersted's law and the oersted unit (Oe) are named after him.

Who showed how a current carrying wire behaves like a magnet?

Others have pointed out that this was discovered by Hans Christian Ørsted, and rightly so. The way to turn the effect into something resembling a magnet is to configure that field by winding your wire into a coil. Then, it really does behave like a magnet.

29. Who showed how current carrying wire behaves like a magnet

'Grandpa Hans Christian Orsted'

#BrainlyEverydayWho showed how the current-carrying wire behaves like a magnet?

When a compass needle drifted from magnetic north when an electric current from a battery was switched on and off, Danish physicist Hans Christian Oersted made an unintentional discovery. On April 21, 1820, he said this during a lecture. It proves that electricity and magnetism are inextricably linked. He was, ironically, attempting to demonstrate to his audience that electricity and magnetism are unrelated.

An electric current generates a magnetic field, as Oersted had observed. The current's magnetic field was powerful enough to attract the needle of a nearby compass.

His first assumption was that magnetic effects radiate from both sides of an electric current-carrying wire.

He launched more rigorous examinations three months later and published his findings, related to electricity soon after.
